Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2Sun, 25 Mar 2007 11:00
The Chiltern Ladies travelled to Winchester for a crucial match against South Hants. For Chiltern Ladies it was important to win 3:0 to still have any chance for promotion to Div.1, for the ladies from South Hants it was important to win to be safe from relegation.

On paper it should have been an easy game for the guests but unfortunately the reality turned out to be different. Despite a good warm up the ladies around coach Dr. Brian Haddock (the one with two different socks) couldn’t get into gear and were trailing in the first set constantly by two points. Towards the end of the set they managed to catch up to 22:22 but a couple of unnecessary errors lost Chiltern the first set 25:23.

Unfortunately the second set continued the way the first set finished. South Hants had a quick lead of 10:5. The home team wanted to win this match so much more than the guests. It just didn’t want to gel for the guests and despite some great points the overall lack of consistency cost them the 2nd set 25:22.

The spirit seemed to be broken and the third set went without too much of a fight to South Hants 25:14.

The pressure is now off and the Chiltern Ladies can look forward to their last match of the season at home against Guildford on Sunday 1st April and they are determined to finish the season on a high.

After some very tactful negotiating by Mike Barbour, because 10.15 we still only had three players we reffed the first game between Spikers 2 and Vipers, which was won by Vipers.

Then the main even of the day Spikers 2 vs Mens 2. Mens 2 according to my calculation the day before needed to beat Spikers 2 2-0 and then at least take a set of Vipers to stand any chance of not finishing with the wooden spoon, so little chance of that actually happening, but it would be nice to beat Spikers considering our very scratch together team, playing one beginner, one new player, and Will who would have to consider himself a Men’s 2 “casual”

We had secured the services of the two Pauls from High Wycombe (there’s real dedication for you from some potential new players to travel on a Sunday from High Wycombe on a Sunday the clocks went forward!) to allow us to fulfil this fixture

Despite Spikers superior numbers (i.e. subs!), and despite both Alex and myself having to organise our respective Paul to get into their correct positions throughout the set we were progressing well point wise, and managed to close a very tight first set out something like 29-27!.

The second set went convincingly to Spikers 25-12. So we were down to the slight lottery of a third set sprint to 15. Confidence was low and we were at the turnaround I think 8-5 down. This then progressed to 11-7 down.

Another Season over, with a whimper in a cold sports hall in Farnborough.

The next 5-10 minutes should go down in Chiltern Volleyball Club History. I don’t know how we got there, A combination of excellent serving, good middle blocking and attacking, as we relied heavily on the experienced Will, Mike, Alex and Jon and I suppose a lack of belief by the opposition and I found myself 14-13 up serving for the match. Served the ball in, can’t remember whether there was much of a rally but they got a good dig set and there was an almighty spike coming in from their outside and there I can see Alex and Mike rising Salmon like, made of brick to block their outside, there was no way the ball was coming over, the ball hit the ground on their side convincingly, we had won! I mixture of utter elation, complete disbelief, we had yanked victory from the depths of defeat.

We still ended up with the wooden spoon for the first time in the 9 years I have been playing so that was disappointing but it is always satisfying beating Spikers no matter how good the team fielded is, but with this team it was an absolute miracle.

The real question I suppose is will we be around next season to get back up the table

The vipers game went fairly predictably to Vipers not without the usual contribution reffing wise from Spikers.

Stevie Bamford's Merry Men have previously managed to beat Chiltern Men's 2, but this was not their day despite some excellent hitting. Chiltern consistently led and never seemed in much trouble, except for a spell in the second set.

Highlights were the consistently accurate serving of Alex Heming and James Airey and the powerful hitting of Stefan and Marcel. One tends in volleyball to notice the winning final coup-de-grace in each rally, but the teamwork that leads up to it is vital. In this match, the athletic pickups of low balls from Spikeo's attacks by Linda, Stefan and Mike Barbour, and Linda's setting created the conditions in which James, Stefan and Marcel could make winning hits.

Although Chiltern won most convincingly, they are still bottom of the league with just one fixture to go. Can they avoid the wooden spoon? Watch this space.

Two weeks ago Men's 2 proved they are almost as good as Men's 1. This week, they appeared to be the better team for the first half of the match. They went into an early lead with some excellent serving and hitting against a very subdued and quiet Men's 1 team. Marcel, one of the new members, dominated the point scoring and was rewarded with Man of the Match. But the rest of the team all had their moments of brilliance.
For Men's 1, the powerful hitting of Pete, Doug and, especially, the wiry little Canadian Mike Scutt eventually proved too much for Men's 2 who were overtaken at 17 all.
In the second set, Men's 2 again took an early 4:0 lead with James Airey serving. But, again, it was not to last and, with Wilfredo picking up the Men's 2 attack hits, and Werner brought in to the attack, Men's 2 were overwhelmed again. But, with a five man, one woman squad against nine men, they can be very pleased with their efforts.
Chiltern Mens 2Sun, 04 Mar 2007 16:00
The first match of the day saw a Men's 2 squad of just four regular players and two newcomers take on a massive eleven man Spikeo's team. Are Spikeo's trying to make a point? Perhaps they were still smarting from losing a set to a five man Chiltern squad two weeks before.

The early points were all lost rather than won: first by Spikeo's mistakes then by Chiltern's. By 6:6 the only points actively won were a great serve by Chiltern's Captain Mike Barbour and an intelligent block by Chiltern middle hitter James Airey.

At this point it looked like an even match, but Spikeos gradually pulled ahead to win the first set comfortably. Chiltern's two new players both had an excellent game, winning several points with powerful spiking, but poor cover behind the block showed their lack of cohesion as a team.

The second set saw Chiltern take a commanding-looking lead of 14:8. Alex Heming's serving won several successive points. A Spikeo's timeout, and a good talking-to by their coach reinvigorated them, and they clawed back to 20:20. From here it could have gone either way, but Chiltern twice served out, practically handing the match to their local rivals.

Chiltern Mens 2Sun, 04 Mar 2007 16:00
The Men's 1 v Men's 2 matches are often a reminder that the difference in their levels is really not that great, despite Men's 1 having the bigger and better trained squad every one of whom is a superior player.

This match was no exception. Men's 2 had two totally new players, Stefan and Marcel, and four old lags. So it wasn't surprising that they left gaps behind the block that Men's 1 found very tempting. But their actual hitting and blocking was very good and Men's 1 seemed rattled at 18 all in the first set.
It couldn't last, though, and Men's 1 went on to win the next seven points as Men's 2 became rattled in turn.

The second set had a similar result, so the applecart wasn't upset this time. Next time, though...

Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2Sun, 04 Mar 2007 11:00

After a nice Thai dinner and a good night sleep, the Chiltern ladies were ready for their second match of the weekend at Rushcliffe Arena in Nottingham.

The first set didn’t start quite as planned. Nottingham gained an early lead of 5:1 due to bad receiving but Chiltern pulled back into 5:5 with strong serving from Mari Derham. The southern team didn’t manage to get a clear lead and the score at one point was 12:11 for Nottingham. At that point their setter come to the serve and extended the lead 16:12. The ladies from the South kept making silly mistakes and the score stood at 21:18 against Chiltern when Christine Brown got to the serve. Seven well placed serves and good defence from the whole team let Chiltern take the set 25:21.

Coach for the day, Jon Williams, made three substitutions and the team took the energy from the win in the first set to the next set, establishing a quick lead of 11:5. With more strong serves and a better first ball into the setter, Chiltern never fell behind. Vicky Currer-Briggs played on the wing and adapted well to the new role with good defence positioning. Chiltern finished the second set with the convincing score of 25:18.

At the start of the third set, Chiltern faced Nottingham setter at the service again, and the northern team got to 5:0 quickly. The Chiltern ladies worked their way back into the game but never managed to get ahead. Jon Williams took a time out at 22:23 to refocus the team but Nottingham saw the opportunity to take a set of Chiltern and they used it. The third set went to the home team 25:23.

Now the war was on. Chiltern didn’t intend to drop another set. The whole team pulled together and the ladies from the South took an early lead of 5:3. In the fourth set Nottingham didn’t give up and stayed in the game until Ana Agudo came to serve at 8:8. Soon the score was in Chiltern favour, 11:8, then Nottingham won the serve back but not for long. Ally Newman served three winning balls and pulled Chiltern back into the lead at 15:12. Chiltern was determined not to give anymore points away. Ally Newman, the setter, used her hitters well and when Silvia Mussi came to serve at 18:15 Nottingham didn’t get any more points. Silvia Mussi served seven strong balls and put Nottingham under so much pressure that, together with the block and the counter attack of Chiltern, the home team got beaten 25:15.

The two wins from the weekend were important to keep Chiltern in the run for the play-offs. Two more matches, on 25th March and 1st of April, will be the deciders and, if the performance of the weekend is anything to go by, the ladies are well up for the matches ahead.

Chiltern Ladies travelled three hours up to play Norwich Ladies in the National League Division 2.The first set started well with four winning serves from Isabelle Collot. Norwich hold their own but consistant serving from Chiltern and more pressure in the attacks let Chiltern take the first set 25:20.
The second set started simular to the first with strong serving which gave Chiltern a 8:1 lead. Problems with the receiving and too many serving errors allowed Norwich to catch up to 5:8. However, some lovely cross court hitting from Silvia Mussi, who was voted player of the match, and fantastic middle action from Marcela Krcmova gave Chiltern a comfortable lead of 16:7. Norwich never got back into the set and Chiltern was victorious 25:16.
In the third set the Chiltern Ladies struggled to get going. Norwich's defense and serving improved whereas the guests from the south made a few too many mistakes and could't find a consistent line in their play. It was a close set but went 25:23 to the Ladies from Norwich. At the beginning of the 4th set, the coach, Brian Haddock, urged the team to focus on their core skills. Chiltern kept the lead by two points for most of the set. The team worked hard and despite good defense from Norwich took the score to 23:23. Chiltern won the serve back to a 24:23 lead. Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden finished the set and the match with a quick backcourt hit.
With this good result of 3:1 the Chiltern ladies drove to Nottingham, where they were spending the nightahead of the match the next day at Nottingham.

Development League Match 09-02-07

On Friday 9th February I ventured off to St Gabriels School in Newbury with a team of 5 in my car. Two of our young hopefuls, after only one coaching session, sat in the back nervous at the thought of their 1st volleyball match. We arrived to see that Vodafone's team were all adults which made Freya and Rhiane even more nervous but relieved when the Newbury Juniors arrived. One of which Isabel, kindly donned on our Chiltern colours and made us 6.

The first match was against the might of Newbury Juniors who beat us 15 - 8 in the 1st set. Our team (Diane, her daughters Freya & Rhiane, Poala, Isabel and myself) were just getting to know eachother :-). We weren't down hearted because we were having fun. So much so that with some fine tuning we fought well and scraped through to win 2nd set 15 - 13. Unfortunately we were unable to win the last set and therefore the match. It didn't matter because I could see how our young hopefuls and Poala improved during the match and had FUN throughout. Player of the match went to one of the Newbury Juniors, the tiniest girl on their team who well deserved the honour.

We refereed the next match with Diane helping Rob Scarr with scoring, myself up on the stand as 1st Ref, one of Vodafone's organisers 2nd Ref and the rest of my team doing the 4 lines each with their flags to wave. I found it confusing to know what was allowed and what was not allowed in the adjusted rules for the Development League but we managed to soldier on and get the job done. Yet again the might of Newbury Juniors won the match but had lost the first set to Vodafone. The results went like this: 13-15 to Vodapone, 15-12 & 15-9 to Newbury Jnrs. Player of the match went a Vodafone player.

So then it was time for the last match, us against Vodafone. With nerves back in play and having to get to know how eachother play we lost the first set 15-10 but we had FUN and there were some fantastic plays from our youngsters and good hits, sets and covering from Poala. 2nd set we won 15-9 and hope shone on the teams faces. We entered into the last set hoping that we would win the match but alas we were unable to due to "not so in the spirit of the Development League" serving from Vodafone. Although we were beaten 15-7 it hadn't dampened our spirits and we had FUN taking part. The team played really well considering it was Freya, Rhiane and Isabel's first ever volleyball match. I am so proud of the team's performance and attitude. This was also reflected by the Reffing team's decision of giving Freya, Rhiane and Isabel the honour of Players of the Match as they played equally brilliantly. WELL DONE Team :-) :-) :-). I'm so proud.

The next match is a home match at Waingels College 2nd March 7-10. Could the Beginners, Junior players let me know if they are able to play this match and if anybody else who would like to participate to contact me.

4.2.2007 Chiltern Ladies vs Swiss Cottage 0:3

Chiltern Ladies were ready for a re-match against Swiss Cottage at Kendrick School in Reading with a full squad. The first set started evenly matched with good serving and hitting from both sides until 4:6. The home team was playing well but Swiss Cottage made the points with good defence and winning attacks. Chiltern won the ball back again and again but didn’t manage to put Swiss Cottage under enough pressure with serves or attacks.
The first set went to the guests from London 25:12.
The home team didn’t loose focus but despite good receiving and defending, the attack wasn’t effective enough to keep up in the second set.
Swiss Cottage got a run of 9 serves and Chiltern Ladies did not manage to get out of this rotation. After 22 minutes the set went to Swiss Cottage 25:18
The third set saw the Chiltern team fighting to stay in the match. At 8:11 I.Croceri from Swiss Cottage served and secured 8 points. With this lead the home team wasn’t able to turn the set around and it went to the guests 25:15.
Overall the result didn’t represent the match.
The Chiltern Ladies need to find a way to play consistently at the high level they can play.
Christine Brown was nominated as the player of the match.

The Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2 side play a tough fixture against the Dulwich Tuskers - match report by Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden

A shaky start saw Chiltern Ladies lose the first set to Dulwich Tuskers, 16:25. In the second set, a tactical substitution by coach Dr Brian Haddock saw middle player Vicky Currer-Briggs playing through the wing, leading a convincing come-back. Chiltern gained an early lead with aggressive attacking and excellent defensive work by middle players Mari Derham and Marcella Krcmova. Tuskers managed to come closer towards the end of the set, but thanks to strong, consistent, serving from Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden, Chiltern Ladies finished the set 25:23.

Strong serving from Tuskers threw Chiltern in the 3rd set. Even the four substitutions didn’t improve the situation and the set went with 8:23 to the home team.
In the fourth set Chiltern came back with renewed determination, attitude and aggression. Setter Ally Newman foxed the Tuskers defence with some cracking second ball attacks. Silvia Mussi’s consistent power hitting and Mari Derham’s run of six serves in a row the fourth set ending in Chilterns favour 25:19.

The control and discipline from the fourth set was taken into the fifth set, where Chiltern dominated, ending the match 15:9.

Chiltern has now moved up to 3rd place in the National Volleyball League, Division 2 table.

Match report: Leeds vs. Chiltern Ladies (1:3)

After a good socializing session on Saturday night, the team was more than ready to take on first placed Leeds. Quickly the team took a two point lead which they never let go off. Despite a fairly close result of 25:23 in the first set for the Chiltern Ladies, they were in control the whole set. The second set continued in the same spirit. The teams matched each other up to 15 all. Solid Silvia Mussi hit a spectacular back court which must have intimidated the opposition even more. Serving from Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden and Christine Brown sealed the second set with a convincing 25:16.
The beginning of the third set seemed to happen completely without the Chiltern Ladies, in particular in serve-receive. Nothing seemed to work and Leeds was 13:1 up before the guests started to join the match. They finally fought back in the set, but they didn’t manage to turn it around. The set went 25:13 to Leeds.
The Chiltern Ladies shook off the weird third set and were determined to bring the match home with the fourth set. The team took an early lead of 7:2 due to strong serves from Ally Newman again. The rest of the team just slotted in with their defense and attacks which couldn’t be faulted. Leeds didn’t find a way to rattle the Chiltern cage. Five more serves from Karen Rogers and net domination by middle hitter Mari Derham left Leeds trailing 20:9.
Ana Agudo sealed the second win of the weekend with five more strong serves with a final result of 25:9
Overall, the team can be proud of the weekend’s result which moves them up to fourth position in the league. A great place for be before the Christmas break.
The next league match will be away against Dutch Tuskers on January 28th.

Match Report: Salford vs. Chiltern Ladies (2:3)

The Chiltern Ladies traveled up North for a double header in Salford and Leeds.
On Saturday, the ladies met Salford in Manchester. The first set started a bit shaky and it took the team some time to shake off the long hours in the car. The set went 18:25 to Salford
In the second set, the ladies started with strong serving and took a comfortable lead of 13:3. Consistent work in defense and confident hitting never allowed Salford to get back into the game and Chiltern ladies won the second set 25:15.
Some great serving from Ally Newman got the team to an early lead of 6:0 in the third set. Both teams had great rallies but Salford was more successful in finishing the point. They equalized to 12:12 and the rest of the set continued on neither team gaining a clear lead. A few receiving errors from the guests from the South let the home team take the third set 25:22.
A few encouraging words from coach Brian Haddock and improved communication on court gave the Chiltern Ladies a 13:8 lead which they didn’t let slip away. Karen Rogers injured her thumb but that only spurned her on and she killed three hits through the middle. This attitude and fighting spirit won the ladies from Chiltern the fourth set 25:18.
Full of confidence and determined to win against Salford, who were at position 4 in the league before this weekend, the Chiltern guests never let Salford catch up. Varied ball distribution from setter Ally Newman and some solid hitting from Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden and Silvia Mussi sealed the set 15:9
Ally Newman was nominated player of the match – well done to her and to the whole team for a convincing psychological performance, in particular beating Salford on their home turf.

Chiltern Ladies: NVL Cup Match v Middlesbrough College Mavericks: Age beats Experience

Chiltern had a bit of a slow start and soon decided to write the first set off to jetlag after losing it to erm, not very many points (10, to be precise - oops). The girls, made up of players from both the Div 3 and Div 2 teams, warmed up in the second set and kept fighting back to close the gap but eventually lost it 25-23. The third set showed the young Middlesbrough side what Chiltern were really made of - they stormed through it, convincingly winning 25-12, partly due to very strong serving causing lots of 'pings' on the Mavericks’ part. The fourth set was similar to the second set, pretty close all the way through, Chiltern had the lead early on but probably peaked a little too soon, the Mavericks managed to continuously close the gap and got their first match point at 24-23. Chiltern again kept fighting, both teams took it in turns to take the lead and therefore set/match point. Eventually the Mavericks took the set and game with a score of 30-28. The Chiltern girls had a good and very enjoyable game, it was great to see the teamwork build up with every point, especially as this was a new formation. Well done girls and better luck in the Shield (14th January, away v either Chester or Tees Valley)!

Squad:
Isabelle Collot – setter
Christine Smith – opposite
Marcela Krcmova – middle
Annika Voss – middle
Fabienne Hubert – outside
Karen Davies - outside
Ana Agudo (captain) – outside
Final Score: 3:1 to Middlesborough College Mavericks (25:10, 25:23, 12:25, 30:28)

Sunday 5th November 2006 – Mens2 v Vipers and Ducks

It was a big weekend for British sport this weekend with Spurs at home to Chelsea, Arsenal away to West Ham, England against The All Blacks and, most exciting of all, Chiltern Men’s 2 vs The Reservoir Ducks of Basingstoke. A fixture that over recent seasons has become the division grudge match between two teams wrestling for that second from bottom spot in the table. And if the recent meetings are anything to go by it will prove to be another exciting match up.

First however it was the warm up events, Farnborough Vipers against the Ducks. This was a closely fought contest with Ducks taking an early first set lead. However some big hitting from the Vipers saw them take the first set. The second set was even closer and went all the way. Despite some brave covering from the Ducks they were eventually squeezed out with the Vipers taking all the points.

Next it was the scratch team of Chiltern against the Vipers who were oozing confidence after their first win of the day. Chiltern made a good start and took an early lead. However the Vipers' hitting was again too strong for Chiltern who succumbed 25-17. In the second set the Vipers were again too strong for Chiltern and ran out comfortable winners.

And now, the main even: Chiltern vs The Ducks.

Chiltern, despite submitting the wrong rotation, started the stronger and took an early lead. However the Ducks eased their way back into the set so it was close going into the latter stages. But Chiltern trotted on and cantered out the first set 25-something – first blood to Men’s 2.

The second set was again tight. The Ducks took the early initiative but Chiltern managed to claw their way back and started to trade points with the Ducks. However, concentration was lost when Chiltern experienced a number of rotational issues. This gave the Ducks their chance and they opened out a five point gap towards the end of the set. Excitingly, Chiltern got it back to 24 all. However the Ducks nicked it 24-26.

So, it was to be another three set thriller. Chiltern started the stronger with the Ducks giving away early points. At the turn around Chiltern led 8-2. Despite what can only be described as embarrassing rotational errors Chiltern managed to maintain their organization take the set with points to spare – Hurrah!

So as we all headed home, bleary eyed and battle scarred everything is right again with the sporting world, England are rubbish at rugby, Arsenal and Chelsea lose (John you owe me a beer) and Chiltern Men’s 2 are once again victorious over their Basingstoke rivals.

Match report by Ben Parks.
Chiltern Mens 1Sat, 13 May 2006 09:00
The season finale saw Chiltern enter three teams into the plate - Men, Women and Mixed.
First up were the Men on Saturday morning. Even with key players missing they were still up for showing a few of the Div 1 teams a thing or two. The first match was a local derby against Spikos 2 who were duly dispatched 39-24. The players having adjusted to the timed game format then took on Basingstoke A, the first Div 1 team. Again, Chiltern cruised to victory 32-27. That set-up a mouth-watering against Didcot - to whom we lost the Div 1 playoff 2 sets to 1.
Unfortunately, it was not to be with and, although the match was close, Didcot won 25-17. The Didcot captain apologising for a poor referring decision influencing the outcome of a match. In the last match Chiltern played Oxford although they never really got their game going and lost 24-29.

The Ladies then played the afternoon. Having not won much all season the ladies confidence was low going into the first match. However, they even surprised themselves when they took Newbury close eventually losing 21-24. With improved confidence the next opponents were Farnborough. The team started to work well as a unit and Farnborough were defeated 33-18, a score line to be proud of.
That meant that the next opponents were that Juniors. Charitably Chiltern took their foot off the accelerator in order to try to make it into more of a match. The development team went down 41-21 however the match experience for them was more valuable than the score. Next up were Basingstoke. The experience of the Basingstoke team came through in the end and Chiltern lost 24-33 to end their run in the plate.

The Mixed team played on Sunday morning. First up were Spikos 1 and despite the early hour for a Sunday, the team were awake enough to win 27-24. Next were Newbury and the start of a winning streak was in the offing when they were beaten 21-18. However, that confidence was knocked when we came up against the Chair’s Select, a scratch team organised by the Chair of the BVA. Chiltern went down in a hard fought match 21-24.
This was not the end for the Chiltern team as they still had a shot of meeting the Chair’s Select in the final if we could beat, you guessed it, Spikos 2. The match was a real spectacle, coming down to one last big block from Christian just before the full time air horn. Final score 22 – 21. This meant that once again we were to meet the Chair’s Select. Having just played a close match and the Chair’s Select having sat on the sidelines watching the final was always going to be tougher on Chiltern. This time the Chair’s Select won 21-15 and took the title of BVA Plate winners.

All had enjoyed a great weekend’s volleyball. Many thanks to Dave Fox (Men’s 1), Annaka Voss (NVL Ladies) and all the other member of the BVA committee for all their efforts this year and a grand plate competition.

Next summer tourno’s – watch out here for more news.

In the big fixture of the day Men’s 1 met Maidenhead and it didn’t start well. A collision between Captain Doug Lowrie, wing, and Dave Fox, opposite, forced a substitution late in the first set, so that Dave could check his face was still where it should have been. Doug had caught him with his elbow as he executed a beautiful reverse set – although who it was set to is still a mystery, as he was playing at 4 and the libero, Geoff Collier, was at 5. The set ended 25–17 to Maidenhead.
In the second set the teams were evenly balanced, Wilfredo Garcia having replaced Dave Fox as opposite. With the block not working as well as it was in the first set points were exchanged between the sides blow for blow. Setter Tom Dore slipped over the odd dump to keep the Maidenhead defence on their toes. After a tiring set Men’s 1 emerged winners 26-24.
This setup what promised to be a mouth watering final set. Until, that is, the second ref said ‘that’s not what is written down here’! Panic ensued as one player became a wing instead of an opposite and another player was substituted - all before the first point of the set was played! No name will be mentioned here but lets just say that he has form for the crime and won’t be allowed near a rotation slip again. A manky drink forfeit will be enforced at the next social.
With confidence crushed at such a critical time Maidenhead took full advantage and ran out winners 15-5, despite the strong performances of Christian Codorean through the wing and Andrew Hinder through the middle.
Consequently Men’s 1 is now in the playoffs with Spikopaths and Didcot for a place in BVA Div 1 next year. This match will take place at Didcot’s venue on 23rd April 2006, 09.00 start. Spectators welcome.

Both Chiltern Mens Teams were in action over the weekend. Sunday saw Chiltern Mens I host games at Kendrick School against Chiltern Mens II and Spikeopaths.

In the opening game Mens II faced up to Spikeos. They battled hard with James Airey showing some deft touches at the net, exposing holes in Spikeos cover defence. They lost a tight first set 25 - 21. Unfortunately things didnt go quite so well in the second as they were unable to cope with the heavily top spun jump serve of Spikeos French off setter, which earned him man of the match. In the end they went down 25 - 13.

The second game pitted Mens II against Mens I. Unfortunately for Mens II, Mens I finally started to gel together as a team and played their best volleyball of the season to date. The first set ended 25 - 13. Mens I kept up the pressure in the second set and ruthlessly finished off Mens II 25 - 10.

The final game of the day saw Mens I play Spikeos, their local Reading rivals and fellow promotion chasers. Mens I came out firing on all cylinders, carrying on the high standard of play they started against Mens II. In the first set everything came together for Mens I; strong attack, with Andrew Hinder pounding the 3 metre line, and strong defence, both blocking at the net and pick ups in the back court. Spikeos were never in it losing 25 - 13.

Unfortunately Spikeos raised their game and came straight back in set 2. They went out to an early 6-2 lead from which Mens I never really recovered. Lady luck left them and the breaks that had been going for them in set 1 suddenly started going the other way. In the end Spikeos ran out 25 - 18 winners in the set.

That sent the game into a 3rd and final deciding set, the winners being the first team to reach 15 points. Mens I put the second set loss behind them and came out focused on the task in hand, winning and unleashing heaven. They turned the tables on Spikeos and jumped out to a 3 point lead. The basics that eluded them in the second set suddenly returned, with some great defensive covering behind the block. However, Mens I let Spikeos back into the game losing 3 or 4 consecutive points with errors on serve receive to make the score 12-11 to Chiltern.

The next 5 mins were a climax of high emotion, tension and pressure with Spikeos saving 2 match points and Mens I captain Doug Lowrie almost bursting into tears on court as yet another of his pile driving, floor seeking attacks was picked up by the opposition defence. Eventually the pressure was too much for Spikeos and holes appeared in their defensive cover. Showing a remarkably gentle touch for such a big man, Andrew Hinder tipped the ball over the middle block to finish the game in subtle style, much to the relief of Doug whose fragile emotions had reached breaking point. However it all seemed to be worth it when Doug was nominated man of the match.

Chiltern Mens 1Sun, 27 Nov 2005 11:00
27th November 2005 Chiltern Mens 1 bag a brace of victories to see them continue their unbeaten start to the season.

An unusually large squad with both youth and experience made the trip to Queen Marys College, Basingstoke for a chilly lunch time away fixture that proved to be a little more nail biting then perhaps had been hoped.

The first match, against local rivals Spikeopaths, saw Chiltern opt for youth as the experience watched from the bench (pipes, slippers and knowing looks in hand). In this match Chiltern were breaking in newbie Tom, who was replacing regular starting setter, Simon. Also starting for the first time at opposite was Wilfrado. The rest of the starting line up was Pete and Ben on the wings, Doug and Andy through the middle and Geoff as libero. Mike and Dave helped warm the bench.

The first set was tight from the start with the two teams trading serve. It was clear that Chiltern were taking their time to gel with their new line up. Good attacking play was let down by poor coverage and the Spikeo’s setter made good use of gaps. Going into the closing stages of the set the Spikeos opened up a small lead. An inspired time out was called by the on court captiano as when the teams returned Chiltern ran out 25-23 winners.

The second set was again tight. However Chiltern lost concentration and got stuck on a rotation which saw Spikeos open up a seven point gap. This lapse was blamed mostly on the yellow Chiltern shirts clashing with Dougs hair. Chiltern got it back together but could not make up the deficit – Spikeos took the set 18-25.

In the third set Chiltern turned to Dave's calming influence to steady the ship as he was brought on to replace Wilfrado. It seemed to work as Chiltern opened up an early lead which they managed to maintain at the change over. Chiltern reached 13 points but seemed to stutter as Spikeos clawed themselves to 12 points. However Chiltern held on and took the next two points to win the nervy set 15-12 and the match 2-1. Was it ever in doubt?... of course not.

Next Chiltern took on the home team, Reservoir Ducks in a rematch from the previous fixture. Dave was brought on at opposite, wing duties fell to Mike and Wilfrado. Ben and Pete donned the pipe and slippers on the bench.

Chiltern opened up a commanding ten point lead in the first set and the cruised home 25-11 winners. Chiltern again asserted them selves in the second set, so halfway through Pete and Ben were brought back on to replace Dave and Mike. Ben then immediately forgot how to count to three and set the ball rather than sending it back over the net - it was a good set though. The set finished 25-19 to Chiltern who took the match 2-0.

The third match of the day saw the Pierre Luigi Colina of the volleyball world (Pete) referee a fine two set win by the Spikeos over the Ducks.

The results leave Mens 1 second in BVA Mens Div 2, one point behind Spikeos, but with 2 games in hand.

Chiltern Mens 2Sun, 28 Nov 2004 16:30
28th November 2004 and Chiltern Men’s 2 travel to Bradfield School for a home (from home) fixture against the team formerly known as Basingstoke B (now known as Reservoir Ducks) and (the more sensibly named) Farnborough Lions.

The fixture started with the two away teams facing off. The Ducks took an early lead and despite some big hitting from the Lions, managed to win the match comfortably 2-0.

Next, the main event, Chiltern against the Ducks. During the warm up both teams flexed flab and muscle with great gusto and vigour, hitting the net and back wall at every opportunity. An atmosphere was building amongst the gathering onlooker (his name was Gerald) in that icy cold hall - for he was to witness what will surely be the most tightly contested and hard fought match of the season.

The Ducks started well taking an early 11-3 lead. Chiltern were slow on their feet and were struggling to put points together. Then after big hits from Ben and James, Chiltern sparked into life and were soon level pegging. Going into the closing stages of the set Chiltern were ahead and realised that they could actually win. Steph held her nerve to serve out the set 25-23.

Buoyant after their first set win, Chiltern fielded an unchanged six for the second set and quickly established an early lead. But this time it was the Duck’s turn to claw back the points. However Chiltern were again ahead going into the closing stages. After some big blocking from the Ducks, a fatigued Chiltern saw their glimpse of the winning line slip away. The set went to Ducks by the slimmest of 25-23 margins.

The final set showdown saw an unchanged Chiltern side. The fatigue that was plaguing the Chiltern side was still evident. The Ducks went ahead 5-1. However Chiltern knuckled down and started trading points with the now flagging Ducks.

The business end of the set saw Chiltern with a slim 12-10 lead and Gerald was beside himself with excitement. The scores levelled at 13-13 and the match was going to come down to a 'race to two points' thriller. Chiltern reached the top of the hill first at 14-13 and were serving for the match. The serve was good (i.e. over and in) but the Ducks grasped the opportunity for a reverse hit. As the setter set the ball everything went into slow motion. The Duck’s hitter rose into the air, his feet almost leaving the ground. He flaps at the ball with his sweaty wing. As he made contact, Burt soared from the ground as the loan blocker for Chiltern.

The block was good! And the ball fell back into the Duck’s court. Chiltern had won. For a moment every one stopped not quite believing what they had just taken part in. These are matches that volleyball dreams are made of.

The second match against the Lions saw Chiltern use their substitutes wisely and take the match convincingly 2-0.

This pair of glorious wins sees Chiltern Men’s 2 take a commanding second place in the Division. The question now remains if this rich vein of form will carry them to the end of the season.

The next match is on 12th December 2004 so book early to avoid disappointment.

Ashcombe TournamentSun, 27 Jun 2004 02:02
A grand day out at Ashcombe

Sunday the 20th of June and a number of bleary-eyed Chiltern members set out from their respective domiciles in search of the peacefull town of Ashcombe and the first volleyball tournament of the summer. Despite the early hour, ill infants and constant calls of "are we there yet?" spirits remained high as people weaved their way around the many roundabouts of Bracknell, taking in the delightful views from the M3 and experienced a strangely quiet M25. One short detour to visit Ashcombe Football Club later and the assorted men, women and children assembled themselves at Ashcombe Rugby Club to bask in the sunlight and take in the magnificent views on offer.

A short warm up and a few cups of gourmet tea later it was time to for the ladies and gentlemen of Chiltern volleyball club to go their separate ways, Division 4 for the ladies and Division 3 for the men. In the blustery conditions that followed some fine, some not-so-fine and some not-very-fine-at-all volleyball was played and witnessed by all concerned. Strange as though it may seem a pin-drop could be heard on court when the ladies were playing and the men were actually calling for and chasing the ball at times!

As lunch beckoned the men had awoken from their slumbering first fixture to claim a set and amass some high points totals in their other sets, unfortunately the ladies had other things on their minds (we may never find out) and finished the morning bereft of both points and spirits.

As expected messrs Rowe & McBarron were first to the BBQ and bar areas, closely followed by Rak and Alex...special mention must at this point go to Lusby-Taylor the Younger for a stirling effort in the consumption of multiple burgers. An as yet un-named individual also took advantage of the play-break to partake in not one but two "sports massages", further details may or may not follow.

As the afternoon began both teams took to their respective court areas and continued to battle once more in the good name of the Chiltern Volleyball Club. Again the ladies were eerily quiet and the men were at times playing like a team! As the first after noon session drew to a close the men were sitting in a respectable mid-table position and the women were mainly sitting down. One final match played by the men (and a very, very light ball) followed but victory was this time beyond them and as they refereed the final game one or two members quenched their thirsts in preparation for the drive home.

The tent was packed up, some piggyback fights took place and some pictures were taken (although Linda has refused to print them all out!) and farewells were said as our merry (some moreso than others) bunch of volleyballers returned once more to their res pective castles, tree-houses, huts and cabins. A fun day out was had by all and despite the odd spot of sunburn (Bill, Jo, Stacey & Mike remember your sun-cream next time!) no ill-effects have been reported thus far...

Mens 2...Annus Horribilus finally over

Some people think it's all over, some people say it was all over months ago, some people think it never started in the first place...well it is now. Mens 2 crashed to another pair of defeats on the 25th April to bring their season to an end...a very bottom of the table type of end it was too.

Starting off the day against Basingstoke A, the league leaders, and fielding a record number of players (10), Mens 2 were off to a rather slow start. Under pressure from Basingstoke right from the off Mens 2 surrendered the first set 25-11, losing Big John to injury early on and lacking any mentionable attempts at digging, setting or spiking. The second set saw a slightly improved performance although Basingstoke still won, this time by a margin of 25-18.

The second game of the day against Spikos 2 started well with Mens 2 opening up a commanding lead early on only to make hard work of a 25-22 first set win. The heat and pace of play were taking their toll on the Mens 2 squad but the bizzare decision of leaving the two youngest squad members on the bench was taken and helped Mens 2 snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the final time this season. Any evidence of good vollayball Mens 2 demonstrated in the first set went walkabout from that point onwards as they crashed to 25-11 & 15-10 defeats in the second and third sets of the Spikos match. Some mention should go to some rather dubious refereeing decisions, a shockingly bad pair of shorts sported by Andy the (part-time) Spiko and a lack of leadership both on and off court but Mens 2 didn't play consistently well enough to win either of their fixtures and have much to do to prepare for the year ahead.

On a final note on the days strangeness, Ben was once more miss-spelt by the match officials as the man of the match award this time went to Doug. Ben has been considering lodging a formal complaint as this season he's been robbed of two man of the match awards due to perceived spelling errors.

The Chill Bunnies has once and for all established that they are the best team in the NVL Women’s Division 3 West. By defeating the home team of Wirral and the Cardiff Ladies, the Chill Bunnies have clinched the division title and declared themselves CHAMPIONS!

The first match of the day was between Wirral and Cardiff Ladies where Wirral barely won the match in five long sets. The second match was the Chill Bunnies against Cardiff Ladies…the first hurdle.

The first set against Cardiff Ladies was very easy for the Chill Bunnies. Ally Newman started with her bewildering serves, quickly advancing Chill Bunnies by seven points to none. With Vanda Scholey’s firewall over the net; denying every attempt of an attack, the lead quickly increased to 10 points. Katri Saavalainen somehow became tentative at this point, handing over free balls to Cardiff Ladies. That gave them a chance to build a little bit of momentum. They were able to crawl up to eight points when Katri Saavalainen woke up and started hitting the ball again, stopping all hopes of further advancement for Cardiff Ladies. Vicky Currer-Briggs compounded the Chill Bunnies’ lead by serving seven straight points. As Vanda Scholey continued to deny every Cardiff Ladies attack, Katri Saavalainen continued the serving spree and finished the first set convincingly at 25-12.

The second set was pretty much the same as the first with Ally Newman starting the initial run. The convincing lead of the Chill Bunnies gave them a tremendous amount of confidence. Vicky Currer-Briggs and Vanda Scholey started hitting quick attacks exclusively…thanks to precise passing and controlled defense of Jan Nonog. Fabienne Hubert picked up additional seven consecutive points with her own serves. The Cardiff Ladies managed to exert a few lucky plays to gain some momentum, but couldn’t seem to push hard enough to see light at the end of their dark tunnel. Vicky Currer-Briggs buried them deeper in their tunnel by serving six more consecutive points. The powerful Chill Bunnies serves were the key as Ally Newman confirmed it by picking up where Vicky Currer-Briggs left off and concluded the second set 25-12.

The third set was slightly slower for the Chill Bunnies. The first few rallies were a little confused as Vicky Currer-Briggs and Fabienne Hubert couldn’t seem to decide who passes the serves down the middle. After a few quick instructions from the bench, their gap was filled and the ball never hit their floor again. A pinball action scramble play won by the Chill Bunnies demonstrated their intense focus as they kept the ball in play inches from the floor. Their lead increased exponentially as Jan Nonog and Vicky Currer-Briggs each served six consecutive points. Sharon Germon entered the set and immediately asserted her talents and displayed remarkable hitter coverage. Her defensive prowess allowed Ally Newman to reset the offense to terminal mode. The Chill Bunnies easily wrapped up the third set 25-15 winning the match 3-0.

During the second match, Wirral was deeply analyzing the Chill Bunnies, trying to find tactics they could use to prevail. However, from the start of the first set whistle, Wirral could not execute any of their plans. The Chill Bunnies instantly pounced on them with quick middle attacks by Vanda Scholey. Ally Newman also started the serving spree, which Jan Nonog continued to 11 points. The lead further increased beyond the reach of Cardiff Ladies as Katri Saavalainen started firing her baffling serves. With Jan Nonog’s consistent cross-court kills, the Chill Bunnies totally eradicated Wirral’s hopes, closing the first set 25-12.

On the second set, the Chill Bunnies found enormous confidence that gave them the conviction to try daring plays. Ally Newman called and flawlessly executed spectacular reverse quick attacks with Vanda Scholey, firing up the Chill Bunnies into a massive inspiration for excellence. They all started serving aces, digging the Wirral attacks and turning them into compelling attacks of their own. Pinpoint passing accuracy of Fabienne Hubert and Sharon Germon allowed incessant connections between Ally Newman and Middle Hitters Vicky Currer-Briggs and Vanda Scholey. Six unanswered points were also registered by Fabienne Hubert’s killer serves. Towards the end of the second set, Wirral’s body language indicated that they have given up…and rightly so, as the Chill Bunnies never gave them the room to breathe. They were quickly hammered into submission on the second set 25-12.

The third set quickly became demoralizing for Wirral as they immediately faced powerful attacks from the Chill Bunnies’ middle and right side. Jan Nonog inflicted further damage from her high-speed float serves, racking up an additional six points. The Chill Bunnies were in the zone as their focus was phenomenal in every play. They were all in full composure mode…even on plays trickling down from the net. Sharon Germon was particularly remarkable as she somehow found her groove and started killing the ball from either left or right front. Her determination was also evident as she chased down plays that were off the blocks. By this time, the Chill Bunnies could taste the sweetness of the CHAMPIONSHIP title. They did not offer any chance for Wirral to catch up as they continued the barrage of kills and sizzling serves. The third set was compellingly terminated by the Chill Bunnies at 25-15, winning the match 3-0, and their division with an astonishing record of 14-2.

This VICTORY was a fantastic way to end a great season! The Chill Bunnies have worked real hard throughout the entire season and definitely deserve promotion to Division Two. I am absolutely ecstatic and PROUD of all of them and for what they have accomplished. They have deeply bonded together and developed themselves into a FORMIDABLE TEAM. I only wish that I could have the chance to continue leading them into their new realm. Unfortunately, the USAF needs my services somewhere else in the world. Although this was my first and last season with them as their Coach, I have completely and utterly enjoyed every minute!

As a last note to the Chill Bunnies…GO FORTH AND AIM FOR THE TOP, WHERE YOU ARE DESTINED TO BE!!!

Mens 2...we'll win again, don't know where, don't know when...

Another sunday another pair of defeats for Chiltern Mens 2. After braving the many roundabouts that is the Basingstoke ring road the plucky Mens 2 set out to face Spikos 2 and Basingstoke in a day fraught with disappointment and excitement.

The disappointment was encountered early as Mens 2 disintigrated during the first match of the day against Spikos 2. After a short but encouraging run of serves in the first match all went horribly wrong as Mens 2 plunged to a 25-13 & 25-12 straight sets defeat. Heads were dropping earlier on and the halftime hairdryer treatment didn't help, and whilst the urge to go hide was strong Mens 2 regained enough composure to officiate in the second match of the day.

After confusing all and sundry with a whole host of strange refereeing decisions the players of Mens 2 reformed to take on Basingstoke in the final fixture of the day. Buoyed by the late arrival of Pete the Cat and the tireless vocal support of Fernando, from the bench and the court, spirits were much higher and a smile or two was even detected amongst the Chiltern outfit. Two sets of competitive volleyball followed with Mens 2 coming out unlucky 27-25 & 27-25 losers, both sets of players came off the court both happy and tired to have taken part in such a close game.

Mens 2 may or may not have one last fixture this season and it looks like some more training will be required...not to mention a new player or two...watch this space for the latest developments and news...

Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2Sun, 29 Feb 2004 02:02
The Chill Bunnies have again proven their supremacy as they maintained their lead in their division. They first had to face Cardiff Ladies who were raring to try and defeat the mighty Chill Bunnies.

At the onset of the first set, the Chill Bunnies immediately exerted pressure on Cardiff Ladies with quick middle attacks by Vanda Scholey. Coupled with un-returnable serves by Ally Newman, the Chill Bunnies instantly demoralized their opposition with a 10-0 lead. The Chill Bunnies showed no mercy as Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden registered pounding kills from the right side and baffled them with her own daunting float serves. Fortitude was unrelenting as every attack attempt by the Cardiff Ladies were negated by solid defense of Jan Nonog and Vicky Currer-Briggs. Katri Saavalainen’s intimidating serves added further dilemma for the Cardiff Ladies. As a result, the Chill Bunnies easily demolished Cardiff Ladies on the first set 25-7.

The second set started a bit slower for the Chill Bunnies. A slight change in lineup initially disrupted the chemistry, but a few rallies were enough to regain their seamless connections. Accurate first passes by Fabienne Hubert assisted the terminator kills of Sharon Germon. The diving and rolling defense of the tall but agile Vicky Currer-Briggs fired up the Chill Bunnies determination. The Chill Bunnies offensive surge was building up when Cardiff Ladies managed to throw some lucky plays with their serves and attacks trickling down off the net. Also, a hiccup with the Chill Bunnies defense allowed them to gain a bit of momentum. Realizing their predicament, the Chill Bunnies woke up as Vanda Scholey blasted a few ace serves and Vicky Currer-briggs erected a no-hitting wall over the net. The momentum swung drastically in favor of Chill Bunnies, and Sharon Germon capitalized on the drive and finished the second set 25-13 with her ace serve.

The third set started much better for the Chill Bunnies. Their passes were on target allowing steady connections between Ally Newman and her hitters. All options were available with plenty of room for some daring play. Sharon Germon, normally an Outside Hitter, got a kill from the middle…thanks to controlled digs by Fabienne Hubert and Vanda Scholey. The set was becoming more elementary as Ally Newman and Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden continued to serve aces. With Vicky Currer-Briggs’ outside kill down the line, the Chill Bunnies sealed their winning run 25-13, winning the match 3-0.

The second match was between Cardiff Ladies and Oxford Students, where Oxford Students easily dispatched the disheartened team of Cardiff Ladies in three straight sets. And so, the long awaited match up was about to start. The Chill Bunnies easily defeated the Oxford Students the last time they faced each other. However, the Oxford Students appeared to have prepared themselves extensively for this day of reckoning. They had the gleam of hunger in their eyes as they needed to win this match.

At the start of the first set, it became obvious that the Oxford Students were determined to avenge themselves. They immediately applied pressure on the Chill Bunnies by executing a series of quick attacks and tough serves. Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden picked up most of the attempted kills, but the Oxford Students demonstrated their determination to win by continuing their unrelenting attacks. Both teams were playing superb defense and offense that made the match very exciting to watch. The attacks were back and forth with awesome displays of controlled defense. The one thing that allowed Oxford Students to outshine the Chill Bunnies was the un-returnable jump serves by the Oxford Students Setter. She racked up a few points whenever she served. She also finished the first set 25-15 with an ace serve.

The second set belonged to the Chill Bunnies. They demonstrated their tenacity despite the demoralizing first set defeat. Katri Saavalainen started the set with a quick five-point lead using her powerful float serves. The Chill Bunnies were developing a good momentum when Vanda Scholey went down with a twisted ankle after a terminator block. Fabienne Hubert, normally an Outside Hitter, had to take Vanda’s place…a distressing situation as Fabienne never played the position. The team chemistry was threatened, but Team Captain Jan Nonog made an executive decision to take the middle position. As a result, the chemical bond remained intact. The Chill Bunnies continued their assault as Vicky Currer-Briggs registered reverberating kills from the middle; and with stunning back court defense by Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden and solo blocks by Ally Newman, the Chill Bunnies convincingly increased their lead. A few rotations later, the braced-up Vanda Scholey returned and continued denying the Oxford Students middle attacks. The second set was one-sided as the Chill Bunnies annihilated the Oxford Students 25-12.

The third set was nonchalant for the Chill Bunnies. They must have relaxed too much from the second set because they allowed Oxford Students to gain a good momentum. Their serve receives became erratic, but the digs from sizzling attacks were still on. They were able to start their own surge and kept toe-to-toe with the Oxford Students, but the menacing jump serves were too much for the Chill Bunnies to handle. They became tentative and allowed a few jump serves to drop on the floor untouched. That enabled Oxford Students to push on further from the Chill Bunnies whose confidence was starting to collapse. However, tenacity allowed the Chill Bunnies to stay in the game. Oxford Students had good blocks, but outstanding hitter coverage by Jan Nonog and Ally Newman kept the blocked balls in play. The Chill Bunnies were putting up a very good fight, but the Oxford Students intensified their quick attacks in the middle and shoot sets on the outside. Along with the intimidating jump serves, the Oxford Students dismissed the Chill Bunnies on the third set 25-13.

The fourth set was a much more focused set for the Chill Bunnies. They started it with a quick three point lead from Ally Newman’s well-placed serves. The Oxford Students started to lose their chemistry as the connection between their setter and hitters was at a quandary. The Chill Bunnies capitalized on the situation and intensified their own attacks. Determination was very obvious as the defensive digs were easily transformed into an intense assault. Kills by Katri Saavalainen and Vanda Scholey were made possible by pinpoint passing accuracy of Jan Nonog and Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden. Vicky Currer-Briggs was also relentless in the back court picking up a lot of the Oxford Students quick and down-the-line attacks…an incredible feat for someone who is tall. The Oxford Students did well to keep up with the Chill Bunnies intensity, but couldn’t maintain their focus. It was a very close set, but the Chill Bunnies were too focused and so they were destined to take the fourth set 25-21.

As quickly as they produced focused concentration on the fourth set, the Chill Bunnies quickly lost it on the fifth and deciding set. Defense became extremely tentative as they couldn’t seem to read tipped attacks. Passes were erratic and defense was non-existent. The Oxford Students were not doing the damage, just the Chill Bunnies not doing anything. A time out was called to regroup the bewildered Chill Bunnies, and that initially worked but quickly fizzled. A second time out was called and that made an impact as Vanda Scholey and Katri Saavalainen started a run of attacks reviving the lethargic Chill Bunnies team. Nevertheless, the point gap was extreme and the Oxford Students were not giving up any points. They took the fifth set convincingly at 15-5, and the match 3-2.

The fifth set loss was a travesty as the Chill Bunnies have proven, based on head-to-head record, that they are the better team. The last time they faced Oxford Students, the Chill Bunnies emerged victorious with three straight sets. So, even with the disappointing fifth set loss, I am still very proud of how they played. They played with all their hearts and I cannot ask for anything more. Every team is entitled to an occasional pothole and that was theirs. I know in my heart that the shoddy episode will not be repeated and that they are destined to finish the season with a definite promotion!
Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2Sun, 25 Jan 2004 11:30
The Chill Bunnies have registered their first NVL League loss of the season at home last Sunday, 25 Jan 2004 against the visiting team of Cardiff Lexus. They first had to face Wirral, the second to the last team of the Women’s Division Three West.

The first set of the match against Wirral was a bit of a farce as the Chill Bunnies started really slow and distorted. They were balancing themselves with their heels preventing solid play on the ball. Anticipation faltered and they became reactive. A couple of time outs were called to settle the Chill Bunnies because they were behind in points majority of the set, and were playing catch up the entire time. At one point, they were 20-24 down. After realizing their predicament, the Chill Bunnies woke up and started playing their game. Un-returnable serves from Middle Hitter Vanda Scholey and Outside Hitter Jan Nonog, along with relentless defense from Outside Hitter Bev Francis quickly regained the Chill Bunnies’ confidence, allowing them to take the set at 27-25. This was testimony to the tenacity the Chill Bunnies possess…a difficult win, but a win nonetheless.

They realized that the first set should not have been so difficult and were determined to do better on the second set. At the start of the second set, however, they again found themselves lagging behind because of erratic passing and defense. Another time out had to be called and that somehow settled them down. They started focusing much better and became more consistent. Middle Hitter Katri Saavalainen started to punish Wirral with her kills from the middle and outside. The Chill Bunnies still had the tendency to get stuck in a rut but they were able to get out of it easier than they did during the first set. Wirral played very good defense, but the momentum swung towards the Chill Bunnies and they weren’t giving it up. Setter Ally Newman, despite a bad back, worked hard to set the erratic passes. The Chill Bunnies closed out the second set at 25-19…a much better result.

The Chill Bunnies started the third set with a new lineup with Outside Hitters Sharon Germon and Fabienne Hubert. That initially disrupted the chemistry, but they sorted themselves out quickly and focused on the work at hand. They were on their way to a good advance, but towards the middle of the set, the Chill Bunnies again started to become tentative. This allowed Wirral to stay within striking distance of the Chill Bunnies. There were confidence-enhancing attacks from Vanda Scholey and Opposite Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden, but only to be negated by numerous service errors. They couldn’t seem to regain momentum and dominate the opponents as they normally do, but they were consistent enough to pull off another triumph 25-23, winning the match 3-0. It was a grueling victory that was indicative of the trend for their next match.

The second match was an exhausting five-set match between Cardiff Lexus and Wirral, with Lexus barely emerging victorious 3-2. The Chill Bunnies had all that time to analyze Cardiff Lexus and to mentally prepare themselves for the match.

At the start of the first set against Lexus, the Chill Bunnies proved that they can stay consistent as they took lead and stayed ahead throughout the set. They still had the odd shank passes; but for the most part, they were on target; allowing consistent kills. Vanda Scholey regained her passing accuracy and Jan Nonog and Katri Saavalainen continued their tough serves that perplexed Lexus. The one thing that was dangerously creeping in was their tentative defense, but they kept it at bay. The Chill Bunnies, despite the lingering nerves, stayed composed and focused enabling them to clinch the first set 25-20.

The second set became totally out of character for the Chill Bunnies. Serve receives, regardless of reshuffling, didn’t seem to work. Tough serves by Jan Nonog, Vanda Scholey, and Katri Saavalainen continue to make a difference, but errors were slowly becoming evident. Defense was also mediocre at best. They became reactive and panicky on court, not able to control even free balls. It was as if they were in slow motion in a Charlie Chaplin show. There were the occasional flashes of brilliance…kills by Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden and Bev Francis that enabled them to keep up with Lexus, but was not enough to fire them up and take the lead. The only thing left that was holding the Chill Bunnies together was chemistry and their tough serves, but in spite of their best efforts, the Chill Bunnies were in great turmoil, allowing Lexus to defeat them 18-25.

A slight change in lineup was introduced on the third set with Fabienne Hubert in as Opposite. This is to somehow inject a “fresh perspective”, which initially worked, but quickly turned sour. The chemistry became volatile as defensive positions became confused. A time out had to be called to reorganize them. They were able to work it out towards the end and able to crawl up the ladder with tough serves and outside attacks, but were too late. The point gap was too much, so again the Chill Bunnies go down 18-25.

The fourth set started the Chill Bunnies with conviction as they took off with a three-point lead. The initial line up was working fine up until the middle of the game when they again lost focus and became confused and quiet on court. Their body language showed that they were demoralized…not because of the power of Lexus, but because they have lost their confidence due to “unforced errors”. A line up change was becoming an essential last-ditch option. Fabienne Hubert and Sharon Germon were ordered to warm up when the Chill Bunnies on court suddenly found their focus and balance. With Vanda Scholey’s terminator blocks and serves from Jan Nonog and Ally Newman, the 15-point lead was quickly cut down to nine. A renewed confidence emerged and the line up change was revoked to maintain momentum. With the Chill Bunnies down 15-24, Bev Francis made sure of every serve, even if it meant serving underhand. They were able to crawl up to 18 points, but their hopes were snuffed out with a defensive error, losing the fourth set 18-25, and the match 1-3.

This loss made the race for NVL promotion a more daunting task for the Chill Bunnies. They need to quickly regain the confidence and intensity that they had before the holiday season. Perhaps they were given too much time to relax, or perhaps they had too much turkey over Christmas and New Years. Whatever the reason, THEY BETTER GET IT BACK…FAST!!!

Mens 2 off the bottom!
Sunday 18th January 2004

The microcosm that is the Berkshire volleybally community is still recovering after enduring the double shock of a second Mens 2 victory and what some have referred to as an absurd, bordering on ridiculous man of the match decision during the first fixture of 2004.

The first match was a real clash of minnows as the bottom two teams, Chiltern Mens 2 and Farnborough Vipers, came head-to-head in the first six-pointer of the season. With two new players, Darren & Fernando, in tow and some Swedish rallying cries the Chiltern squad were in fine spirits and set about the first set as if a new season had begun. Chiltern made hard work of the first set but eventually ran out 28-26 victors and looked set to take the match. The second set saw a much more disciplined Chiltern performance, cutting down on service and reception errors and becoming more attacking as midday approached. An excellent team performance, and the unleashing of the gimp, hell and Darren (in that order) led to a 25-15 win to seal a 2 sets to nil victory and three much needed points. Drunk on the sweet taste of victory (or was that a can of bitter Chris?) the Chiltern squad were stopped in their tracks on hearing Rak had been given man of the match, rumours still persist that Ben was misspelt on the score-sheet and tensions mount as calls for an official enquiry grow in volume.

Next up were Spikopaths 3 and having already secured three points the decision was made to drop the Mens 2 dream team quartet of Ben, Fernando, Mike and Rak for the second match of the day. Despite a fine repertoire of mini and major mooses and mice by Darren, Spikos won the first set 25-21 in a very tense and sometimes very noisy atmosphere. The "big four" were recalled to the court for the second set and, despite the odd wayward pass, put in a tremendous effort to level the scores with a 25-19 second set stunner. But Chiltern hopes were dashed in the third and final set as Spikos ran out 15-9 winners to clinch the three points up for grabs.

And there the day's play ended, three points richer and off the bottom of the table, Chiltern Mens 2 managed to prove, as once sung by Yazz, that the only way is indeed up!

The Chiltern Ladies NVL Team was knocked out of the Women’s Cup Competition last Sunday, 18 Jan 2004. After tricky navigation through the city of London, the Chill Bunnies arrived to a ready, eager and tall Division One team of Dulwich Tuskers. During warm-ups, the Tuskers were showing off their reverberating kills, trying to intimidate the Chill Bunnies.

The intimidation worked on the first set as the Tuskers were running quick attacks and combination plays that perplexed the Chill Bunnies. Service reception and defense, for the Chill Bunnies, was totally unbalanced because they couldn’t seem to anticipate the plays. The Chill Bunnies were caught flat-footed and easily put on ice in the first set 13-25.

The second set was a bit more of a competition. The Chill Bunnies, despite the demoralizing first set loss, did not give up. They learned the Tuskers style of play and adjusted their strategy. They also focused more on the serve receive, which gave them more than a few kills of their own. The momentum of the set was swinging quite erratically with both teams staying toe to toe. The Chill Bunnies have exerted a valiant effort, but they were overpowered in the second set 19-25.

The third set was very similar to the second. The Chill Bunnies even managed to stay ahead of the Tuskers by four points, but with their lack of experience with division one style of play, they couldn’t sustain the lead. They played with all their hearts, but were defeated on the third set 19-25, losing the cup match 0-3.

This loss was a very good learning experience for the Chill Bunnies because this would be the type of team they could face if and when they get promoted to Division Two (touch wood). They now know what aspect of their game needs work and they will have to start working on them immediately to ensure their promotion possibility!

Another dazzling performance was recorded in history last Sunday (14 Dec 03) by the STILL undefeated Chiltern Ladies NVL team! The long journey south to Weymouth greeted them with a packed Weymouth Sports Centre car park. After “creatively” finding available parking spaces, they entered the home of the ready and eager Weymouth Ladies team. On the warm ups, the Chill Bunnies were doing their normal intimidating kills, but the Weymouth Ladies were doing well to hold their own.

At the start of the first set, the Chill Bunnies jumped out to a five-point lead with the well placed serves of Middle Hitter Vanda Scholey. At the same time, Outside Hitter Jan Nonog and Middle Hitter Vicky Currer-Briggs proved unstoppable with terminating kills around the blocks. The relentless bombardment was highlighted by the sizzling artillery fired through the floor by Opposite Hitter Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden. Mirjam’s intense grunts at the moment of impact sounded like reverberating recoils from her 80mm guns. They were well on their way to annihilating the opposition; however, after reaching a commanding 10-point lead, the Chill Bunnies relaxed their guard and allowed Weymouth Ladies to throw some sizzling serves of their own that perplexed the Chill Bunnies. Weymouth Ladies were on their uphill climb and were gaining fast, but the Chill Bunnies’ tenacity had reasserted itself and enabled them to regroup and focus. Weymouth Ladies put up a valiant effort, but could not overcome the Chill Bunnies from capturing the set 25-20.

The second set started similar to the first set with the Chill Bunnies ahead with Jan Nonog’s unpredictable float serves. The Chill Bunnies were still having problems with the Weymouth Ladies’ high-speed servers, but it was negated by strapping defense displayed by Outside Hitter Sharon Germon. Great ball control fed the consistency of Setter Ally Newman, who was incessantly connecting with Mirjam Helmshrott-Bowden. From the left and right, Mirjam continues to punish the demoralized Weymouth Ladies defense. Her “recoils” were getting more and more intimidating! Again, the Weymouth Ladies were trying very hard to stay within striking distance from the Chill Bunnies using their daunting serves but they were not enough. By serving out the set 25-18 with an untouchable ace serve, Team Captain Jan Nonog proved to the Weymouth Ladies that anything they can do, the Chill Bunnies can do much better!

The third set became elementary for the Chill Bunnies. The serve receive problem was still lingering on, but under control. The Chill Bunnies were getting better at adjusting their receiving formations, improving their passes and allowing Ally Newman to connect the quick kills for Middle Hitters Vicky Currer-Briggs and Katri Saavalainen. Katri also proved that the Chill Bunnies’ serves are much more compelling by serving nine straight points. This set was one-sided as the Chill Bunnies dominated the Weymouth Ladies all the way to the concluding kill by Sharon Germon, taking the set 25-17 and the match in three sets to none.

The second match was against the Whitefield Ladies who were already in the sports hall scoping out the Chill Bunnies and taking notes during the third set action against Weymouth Ladies. The first time they clashed, the Chill Bunnies emerged victorious in four sets. This victory was a positive boost to the already superior Chill Bunnies team giving them a psychological edge.

The two teams started the first set with the Chill Bunnies having a convincing 13-point lead from Jan Nonog’s un-returnable serves. Whitefield Ladies also have tough servers, but they did not unnerve Outside Hitter Fabienne Hubert as she was controlling the first passes to allow the deadly connection between Allyson Newman and Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden. The set was wrapped up quickly by Katri Saavalainen continuing what Jan Nonog had started. She served the remainder of the points, easily taking the set 25-12.

The second set was a complete turn-around for the Chill Bunnies. They might as well had their backs turned to the action because they were quickly down three points to seven at the start and the Whitefield Ladies were steadily increasing the lead. The Chill Bunnies couldn’t seem to find their footing as their passes were all over the place. Serve receiving formations were confused giving the Whitefield Ladies enough momentum to exert pressure on the bewildered Chill Bunnies. A time out was called to regroup the Chill Bunnies. They were initially able to climb out of the rut by slowly playing catch up at nine points and were able to crawl within three points of Whitefield Ladies. The Chill Bunnies generated a tenacious effort, but they couldn’t sustain it. Their focus started to crumble and became tentative and quiet on court. They were demoralized and defeated on the second set 19-25.

The second set loss served as a painful lesson for the Chill Bunnies and part of the bitter aftertaste must have lingered on because they again found themselves down three points to six on the third set. After another time out called, Jan Nonog went on to serve five points in a row, taking the Chill Bunnies to a three point lead. Vicky Currer-Briggs also flawlessly executed a series of one-on-one blocks, enabling them to maintain their lead with a renewed confidence. The Whitefield Ladies were scrambling for everything, giving the Chill Bunnies a run for their money. The rallies were very long and nerve wracking with Whitefield Ladies winning most of them. The Whitefield Ladies played with all their hearts…an effort worthy of praise; however, power is a vital ingredient to winning a match and power belonged to the Chill Bunnies. The Chill Bunnies then intensified their attacks that the Whitefield Ladies’ scrambling defense could not cope with. It was an exhausting, momentum swinging set, but the Chill Bunnies managed to power their way into the third set, winning it 25-19.

The fourth set was testimony to the type of volleyball team the Chill Bunnies are destined to become! The tough serving Katri Saavalainen started the set with a 10-0 lead. This was capitalized by a succession of superb volleyball play. Vanda Scholey and Vicky Currer-Briggs both extended the roof over the Whitefield Ladies net, denying any chance of attack, while simultaneously executing quick thunderous kills of their own. This wouldn’t have been possible if not for pinpoint accuracy of serve receives and controlled defense by Jan Nonog, Katri Saavalainen and Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden. Ally Newman returned the bewildering to the Whitefield Ladies by mixing up her sets very well. They didn’t know where the powerful attacks were coming from and that opened the Whitefield Ladies defense. The Chill Bunnies had definitely pulled together and demonstrated an awesome display of championship volleyball. They obliterated Whitefield Ladies in the fourth set 25-7, winning the match three sets to one.

This AWESOME VICTORY for the Chill Bunnies was a great Christmas present for me as their Coach, and for them as members of a FINELY-TUNED VOLLEYBALL MACHINE! The pride I have for them is only surpassed by the effort they have shown me in the quest for perfection. I couldn’t ask for more and I am VERY VERY PROUD to be a part of an AWESOME TEAM!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, CHILL BUNNIES!!!
Chiltern Ladies National League Div 2Sun, 30 Nov 2003 11:30
The Chiltern Ladies NVL has again notched a couple of VICTORIES on their belts last Sunday (30 Nov 03). Plymouth Ladies and Telford Ladies started the triangular with Telford Ladies narrowly beating Plymouth Ladies 3 sets to 2. The Chill Bunnies were in the hall early trying to analyze the match and by the middle of the fifth set, they were eager to get on court!

With Plymouth Ladies first match loss, the Chill Bunnies capitalized on their trepidation by intimidating them with their thunderous kills during warm up. The Chill Bunnies went on court very strong at the start of the first set and continued their threats with un-returnable serves from Ally Newman and Jan Nonog giving them a commanding 10-point lead that steadily increased. Early in the first set, Beverley Francis sprained her right ankle after making a terminator block, sending her nervously to the bench. That didn’t blur the Chill Bunnies’ focus as Fabienne Hubert stepped up and the assault persisted without losing the advantage. Thunderous kills continued as Middle Hitters Katri Saavalainen and Vanda Scholey was attacking over and around the blocks. The Plymouth Ladies were easily beaten into submission on the first set as the Chill Bunnies swiftly took the first set 25-7.

The second set was a more competitive match as the Plymouth Ladies took lead and stayed ahead for a good part of the set. The Chill Bunnies must have relaxed too much after an easy first set giving Plymouth Ladies the confidence to push hard. However, it was not enough to overcome the consistency of the Chill Bunnies. Opposite Hitter Mirjam Hemschrott-Bowden found gaps in the Plymouth Ladies defense and took advantage of them. The cease fire was revoked and the Chill Bunnies resumed their offensive operations. It was as if the Chill Bunnies woke up from a nightmare, they took off and gave Plymouth Ladies only three more points. It shouldn’t have been this difficult, but the Chill Bunnies stole the second set 25-19.

Beverley Francis came back on the third set following a few test runs of her ankle. Her relentless determination and skill became evident as she played very well even after injury. Even with Beverley’s determination, the Chill Bunnies consistency was again lagging during the third set. A time out had to be called because the Plymouth Ladies were ahead 16-20. After a few inspiring words from the Team Captain Jan Nonog to “steady the boat”, a plan was formulated and executed flawlessly. Katri Saavalainen turned up the heat on her serves catching Plymouth Ladies on their heels, enabling the Chill Bunnies to close out the third set 25-22, winning the match three sets to none.

The Telford Ladies were the Chill Bunnies’ next victims of the day. They faced each other during the season opener and the Chill Bunnies narrowly beat Telford Ladies in five sets. That dreadful history didn’t seem to bother the Chill Bunnies as they took an early lead in the first set and showed everyone that they have tremendously improved since their first match. The speed and agility of Setter Ally Newman allowed her to make good use of her attackers who were only eager to oblige. Consistent kills down the line by Outside Hitters Jan Nonog and Beverley Francis, coupled by incessant one-on-one blocks by Middle Blocker Vanda Scholey has elevated the Chill Bunnies’ conviction. They stopped any chance for Telford Ladies to build momentum, taking the first set convincingly at 25-11.

The second set was slightly more challenging because Telford Ladies have regrouped and gained more confidence. Their serves were steadily becoming an irritation for the Chill Bunnies. Telford Ladies were also starting to read the Chill Bunnies’ attacks as their blockers were starting to line up better and their defenders seemed to be touching every attack. Realizing this, the Chill Bunnies amplified their powerful attacks to a higher intensity. Fabienne Hubert found her range and timing from the left side as her attacks were finding deep corners and extreme angles…impossible for Telford Ladies to defend. As the set dragged on, the rallies became longer and longer. Focus from both teams was unyielding. Fitness turned out to be the deciding factor and the Chill Bunnies definitely has the advantage in that department. The battle was relentless with the attacks going back and forth, but the Chill Bunnies proved their consistency and tenacity by working hard to terminate the set 25-22.

The third set was even more challenging for the Chill Bunnies. The momentum swing was nerve-racking! The Chill Bunnies couldn’t seem to find synergy and allowed Telford Ladies to keep up with them. The name of the game was controlled defense and both teams displayed remarkable defense. Middle Blocker Katri Saavalainen demonstrated her defensive skills by making awesome diving saves from the middle back. She also started another run of points on serve when they were down 17-20. The Chill Bunnies managed to get ahead 24-21 but their focus started to falter. Confusion on serve receives, gaps in defense, and panic moments allowed Telford Ladies to shoot some un-returnable serves and terminator blocks of their own and crawl back up to win the third set 25-27.

A refocused Chill Bunnies team had emerged on the fourth set determined to show that the last set was a fluke and will never happen again. They again jumped out on the lead with a more focused defense and more powerful offense. Even with the Telford Ladies playing good defense, the relentless attacks from the Chill Bunnies were too powerful. They also started to mix their shots and didn’t allow Telford Ladies to develop any kind of rhythm. As it should be, the third set was terminated quickly by the Chill Bunnies 25-11, securing the match and their undefeated record.

This was a hard fought victory for the Chill Bunnies…harder than what it should have been. Their undefeated record and their perception of the other teams in the league have made them a little “complacent” with their determination and focus. They need to keep playing as if they are the underdog with a lot to prove, even if they don’t. This is something that they need to work hard to regain and sustain all the way to the end of the season. They need to transform their “moments of brilliance” to a “business as usual” to ensure promotion to Division 2!

The first set was very close all the way up to 24 all. Chiltern looked good.
The second set never went our way, with Basingstoke's attack increasingly dominant.

Brookes had a team of mixed ability. Unfortunately for Chiltern, their best players were better than ours, particularly in the attack, so on certain rotations we lost a lot of points.

Last Sunday (16 Nov 2003), the Chiltern Ladies NVL has again proven their might by defeating Whitefield Ladies and their arch-nemesis, the Oxford Ladies!

The first match was against Whitefield Ladies from Bath. The first set was a bit of a nightmare for the Chill Bunnies as they all seemed to be asleep on court. Passes were uncontrolled and defense was fragmented. They had the will and determination, but couldn't seem to push to make anything work...they were tentative and stuck in a rut! A time out was called to somehow regain their composure. That initially worked as they started to rally back, but couldn't sustain it and ended up losing the first set 19-25. Perhaps it was just first game jitters, which they will have to work to eliminate.

The second set was retribution for the Chill Bunnies. Potent serves by Jan Nonog, Mirjam Helmschrott-Bowden and Ally Newman was key in propelling the Chill Bunnies to a commanding lead giving them a tremendous amount of confidence. Setter Ally Newman was making remarkable connections with the hitters as they pounded their opponents with a barrage of kills from the wing, quick middle, reverse, and even back court. Whitefield Ladies didn't know what hit them as the attacks were coming from everywhere. The relentless bombardment was all possible due to pinpoint passing accuracy and controlled defense. The second set ended quickly with a 25-12 win for the Chill Bunnies. Katri Saavalainen debuted on this set as an outside hitter, and apart from a few panic moments and lost transitions, she played marvelously. With a few more practices and match experiences, Katri will gain considerable amount of confidence.

The third set was like a mirror image of the second set. The demoralized Whitefield Ladies couldn't overcome the consistency of the Chill Bunnies. With continuing powerful attacks and unyielding defense, the set was terminated by the Chill Bunnies at 25-16.

The fourth set was a bit more challenging for the Chill Bunnies as the Whitefield Ladies were able to regroup and found a way to penetrate the Chill Bunnies' defense perimeter. Whitefield Ladies were focused and determined to take the match to a final fifth set and were ahead at some point, but the Chill Bunnies were in no way chilled with their resolve. Even with outside hitter Bev Francis developing a back spasm, the Chill Bunnies still pinned them down at 24 and pushed hard for the last two points, winning the match at 26-24, and three sets to one.

The second match was between the Whitefield Ladies and Oxford Ladies with the Oxford Ladies emerging victorious 3-0. With the Oxford Ladies second match win, the Chill Bunnies had to device a definitive strategy to be implemented on the third match. Scouting the opposition proved its merits as the Chill Bunnies jumped in front at the first set of the third match and never gave up anything for the Oxford Ladies. The Oxford Ladies fought hard using the big guns on their arsenal, but the Chill Bunnies were virtually bullet catchers as they quickly snuffed any chances of terminal velocity. Great defensive digs and pick-ups by Fabienne Hubert, Vicky Currer-Briggs and Jan Nonog enabled the Chill Bunnies to turn around and blow away the Oxford Ladies with their big guns. Oxford Ladies put up a valiant effort, staying toe-to-toe, but the Chill Bunnies proved to be too powerful, taking the first set 25-20.

The second set was an awesome display of volleyball prowess from the Chill Bunnies! Blast walls above the net constructed by middle blockers Vicky Currer-Briggs and Vanda Scholey was unwavering, giving them terminator blocks. Hitter coverage was also key in their relentless attacks as blocked attempts are reset to an even bigger assault. Focus and determination were the buzz words and the Chill Bunnies certainly assimilated the principle and took off with it...with conviction! With panic as their enemy, they maintained composure even while scrambling for an errant ball. The Chill Bunnies afforded no mercy for the Oxford Ladies as they totally annihilated them on the second set 25-9.

The Chill Bunnies again jumped out with a six-point lead on the third set making the Oxford Ladies Coach worry about his line up. He started calling time outs and substituting at every opportunity, hoping to somehow disrupt the steadfast momentum the Chill Bunnies had created for themselves. He tried every combination using everything at his disposal, but to no avail. One remarkable display of the Chill Bunnies lethal combination was when the Oxford Ladies middle and outside blockers were fooled by the jump setting Allyson Newman, giving unobstructed reverberating kill for the middle hitter Vanda Scholey. With the Chill Bunnies focus and determination, it was inevitable for them to conquer the Oxford Ladies in the third set 25-17, winning the match three sets to none.

This GREAT VICTORY for the Chiltern Ladies NVL Team has secured their TOP POSITION in the league by four points above Oxford Ladies. As their Coach and Mentor, I am VERY PROUD of everyone of them...and for what they have achieved and their never ending thirst for excellence!

Sunday 16th November saw Chiltern BVA Mens 1 take on the might of two Hampshire teams in the form of Basingstoke and Farnborough. The venue for this clash was Queen Anne’s School in Reading.

Chiltern first match was against Basingstoke’s top team. In the course of the game Chiltern set plays of short attacks which included reverses was a testament of Simon H setting skills and Pete P, James K finishing power through the middle while Andy R polished of the quick reverses with timely placement. Geoff C and Denis F played in the wing with some excellent spiking and outstanding covering skills. Dave F gave it a fine vocal performance from the bench.

The first set was won conformably by Chiltern, however the usual Chiltern slip of mind permitted Basingstoke to close the score up to a less impressive 25-23 to Chiltern.

The second set saw Dave F to take the place from Andy R, however it was soon seen that placing a valuable resource on the bench saw a mighty Chiltern team weaken. The score was going Basingstoke way and once it place beyond reach Andy R was brought back on court to limit the damage. However the damage was done 25-16 to Basingstoke.

It was now down to the finial set, in the first half Chiltern cruised away by taking the lead at the change of ends. Chiltern started to falter allowing Basingstoke back in the game. The foresight and wisdom shown by Dave F as he called a time-out gave the team a chance to collect their thoughts. All started to play as a team and concluded with a heart stopping 17-15 score line to Chiltern. Chiltern still remained undefeated, with only one set dropped.

Could Chiltern beat Farnborough, would Chiltern remain undefeated, can Chiltern go away with maximum points from the fixture. A score line of 25-16, 25-17 to Chiltern confirmed the status of Chiltern BVA Mens 1 as a powerhouse within the division.

Chiltern Ladies were delighted with their latest match result on Nov 2nd. They watched while previous league winners Maidenhead fought a tough fight to narrowly beat Farnborough. Then, after a short break for Farnborough ladies to eat!?, Chiltern played Farnborough. Captain Sue Collier was confident they could be victorious and led an eager team to start the match. The two teams were well matched with the score staying close throughout the first set.

New Chiltern players this season, Katri and Stephanie, adapted to the squad easily and won valuable points with strong serving and hitting. Marte was new to the team (and volleyball!) last year, but stunned the coach, Mike, with her confident court defence and cover.

Chiltern fought hard and won the first set with a couple of points to spare. There were no substitutions for the second set and we should mention the two solid players holding the team together: setter, Natalie, who continues to play high quality volleyball in spite of never being able to attend training sessions! - and Linda - our new star wing hitter (who is normally our reliable setter!) Chiltern was continuing the second set level pace against Farnborough but the fans were getting concerned as the second set approached the end. "More, More" they yelled, frantic that the excitement might end too soon. Two of the squad were even cheerleading from the bench (poor bench!).. and so, with good grace, Chiltern allowed Farnborough to take the second set at the last moment, leaving the match to be decided in the third and final set.

"Enough!" cried the coach! and in complete obedience the ladies dutifully went on court and wiped the floor with the opposition, leaving no doubt as to who was the best team! Nice work, ladies!

Chiltern also played a friendly against Maidenhead. Our two newest and youngest players Stacey Robertson and Joanne Collier had valuable court time and thoroughly enjoyed their second only match. Although Maidenhead won this friendly, they'll have noticed that our new players are already looking good...! They better field their best 6 when they play us next time!

Sunday 19th October 2003 - Sunday saw the first games for both Chilterns mens teams in what can only be called a very local derby for very local people. Basingstoke Mens 2 completed the trio on a very bright Sunday morning at Loddon Valley.

Despite some pre-match squad confusion, the first match of the day was over in two sets as Mens 1 handed out a spanking to the boys from Basingstoke, 25-11 & 25-13.

The second game saw both Chiltern mens teams pitted against each other and surprising as it may seem didn't result in any 12 man brawls or handbags at ten paces. Despite a lack of recognised centre players, Mens 2 put in a brave performance taking 15 and 16 points in the two sets played.

The final game of the day between Mens 2 and Basingstoke 2 was played over three sets as Mens 2 managed to somehow pluck defeat from the jaws of victory, turning a 24-19 lead into a 26-24 loss. Although Mens 2 did win the second set 25-18 the nerves were still evident and a couple of calls by the new referree Pete Parsons (the volleyball equivelant of Pierluigi Collina) didn't help matters at all. All square at a set apiece Mens 2 managed to remain calm for the deciding set and played out a convincing 15-4 win to leave both Chilterns mens teams taking points from the first fixture of the season.
